Seven planets, whole signs
Hellenistic and traditional astrology
Before the outer planets were found, Western astrology was a different practice: seven planets, whole-sign houses, and a set of rules for judging how strong each planet was and what it could do. Sect comes first — a day chart belongs to the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn, a night chart to the Moon, Venus and Mars — and the five essential dignities (domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term and face) score every planet by sign and degree.
Timing was done with the chart rather than with transits: annual profections move the Ascendant one sign a year and hand each year to a lord; the Persian firdaria divide the life into planetary periods; zodiacal releasing from the Lot of Spirit, Valens's method, finds the years that carry the most weight. The Hermetic lots — Fortune, Spirit and five more — are points built from the Ascendant and two planets, reversed by night.
In the app, Essential dignity and Temperament are the place to start; then Profections, Firdaria and Zodiacal releasing in the tables, and the Hermetic lots and Twelfth-parts among the charts.
What the app draws for it
Life Forecast · 4
Horary — A chart for the moment of a question, at the birthplace unless relocated: the considerations before judgement, then the significators by house with their dignities.
Transits — Today's sky around the birth chart.
Secondary progressions — A day for a year, the standard method.
Solar arc directions — Every point advanced by the Sun's own progressed arc.
Core · 3
Hermetic lots — The seven lots of Paulus — Fortune, Spirit, Eros, Necessity, Courage, Victory, Nemesis — on the birth wheel, reversed by night.
Natal (radix) — The birth chart itself.
Cosmogram — The zodiac wheel with no houses: the layout Russian and German schools use when the birth time is uncertain.
Other methods · 1
Twelfth-parts — Dodekatemoria: every placement's hidden second sign, twelve times as far along from the start of its own.
Returns · 2
Solar return — The chart for the Sun's exact return to its birth degree.
Lunar return — The chart for the Moon's next return to its birth degree.
Western Modern
The tropical zodiac with quadrant houses: the psychological tradition most of this century is written in.
Vedic · Jyotiṣa
The sidereal zodiac on the Lahiri ayanamsha, read in whole signs.
Chinese · BaZi
The Four Pillars — Saju (사주) in Korea, Shichū Suimei in Japan. Not planetary at all: a sexagenary calendar whose only astronomy is the Sun crossing each fifteenth degree.
Uranian · Cosmobiology
The Hamburg school: midpoints on a 90° dial rather than aspects on a wheel.
Mayan · Tzolk'in
The counts of days: thirteen numbers against twenty signs, the Haab, the Long Count. No planets at all, and the hour never enters into it.
Japanese · Nine Star Ki
Nine stars on the Lo Shu square: a principal star from the year, a character star from the month, and the house each year puts you in.
Burmese · Mahabote
The little key: seven planets and Rahu in seven houses, from the weekday of birth and the Burmese year. No sky at all.
